The renovations to Schneider will create a charismatic space that is versatile and lends itself to creative set design. By simplifying dated detailing and removing several of the 1970s-added balconies, which fill the large, wooden-trussed room, the space will regain a sense of its original openness while retaining the intimacy of the Ruth Nagel Jones Black Box Theatre. This theatre will accommodate approximately 200 people at different seating levels on three sides of the stage.
The scope of the project includes the installation of a new lighting grid, sound system, lighting and sound control booths, lobby, dressing room, green room, scene shop, and related support space.
Used for roughly thirty years as a student center, Schneider Hall fell out of use in 2005 with the opening of the Lulu Chow Wang Campus Center. Not only will this renovation project bring student life back to the once beloved Schneider Hall, but these renovations will also provide Wellesley College’s many performance groups with a new space to call their own.
