Formerly an auditorium for the Girls’ Normal and Latin School of the 1900’s, the renovation of North Hall at Massachusetts College of Art will create a versatile performance space for the Studio for Interrelated Media (SIM) where new forms of expression come from advances in media and technologies. The facility will also be a resource for the greater artistic community as “one of the major presentation spaces in Boston.” The primary program component of the renovations is the Pozen Performance Center for the Media and Performing Arts, a 4,400 square foot space that will seat an audience of 100-400 people in a variety of configurations. The renovations will also provide the necessary support for the public and the performers.
Improvements to North Hall for the Pozen Performance Center will create a flexible performance space for the theater-in-the-round, proscenium and thrust stage performance, as well as a broad range of media productions. A 40’ x 60’ lighting grid suspended from motorized cranes will provide for theatrical lighting throughout the space, as well as house lighting and gallery lighting at the walls.
The reverberation time for the space will be reduced and the acoustics improved by the treatment of areas of the ceiling with a fabric coverered, fiberglass paneled system with a minimum amount of seams. The existing stage will be provided with a lift for handicapped and equipment access. The public entrance to the Pozen Performance Center will be enabled by a new three-step elevator at the Tetlow Street entrance. This elevator will provide for public access, deliveries and handicapped access from the street level to the basement and theater levels.
