Located in the downtown historic district of Amesbury,
Massachusetts, the design of this new construction project was a successful cooperative effort with the Town Regulatory bodies - Historic District, Design Review, Planning Board and Community Development. Through thoughtful planning and design the development was increased from eight “by right” residential units to fourteen units, with structured below-grade parking, and ground floor retail space along Main Street. The design and approval process was completed in five months from first meeting to the first excavation.
Key to the smooth process and commencement of prompt approvals was a design sensitive to the historic context. The Main Street facade retained cast iron columns from the previous structure, with granite base, lintels, copings and sills, and buff brick facade. The alley ways were preserved, providing access to the city parking at the rear of the building. The back of the building featured balconies and wood clapboard construction, with detailing consistent with the existing context. The project became a key element in the rejuvenation of downtown Amesbury, and a standard for cooperation between private development and public design interests.
