Co-sponsored by the Municipal Arts Society of New York and the National Endowment for the Arts in 1984, the Times Tower Competition was organized in response to proposed redevelopment plans for the Times Tower site in Times Square. The New York State Urban Redevelopment Corporation (UDC) had begun implementing a new Master Plan, and a subsequent proposal featuring four mansard-roofed office towers designed by John Burgee and Philip Johnson had stirred fears in the arts community.

 

This proposal for Time Square addresses the Times Tower site as well as the full length of the Times Square Alley.
